Trump’s arguing that the DOJ should pick up the tab to defend Trump from E Jean Carroll. He’s trying to claim that his response was part of the official act of the president, and not his corrupt dealings.

Imagine… naw fuck that. No Democrat would ever try to pull this stunt, and if they did, the GOP would be drafting new articles of impeachment.

As it is, Democrats should be drafting new articles of impeachment for everything occurring since the last impeachment. Start holding the fucking hearings. Get this all out in the open. Because Trump’s going to try and run out the clock no matter what.

And the day after Trump is run from office, indict his corrupt ass on absolutely everything. Pence, Ivanka, Jared. All of them. Scorched earth indictments for all of their corrupt acts and practices. And then go after his enablers in Congress too. They are complicit in the coverup. They knew, and they enabled Trump and Pence.

GOP delenda est.

Been absent from this site for a while, because Unplugging For Mental Health, but I got into it a few days ago on Twitter with a couple of knuckle-draggers spouting QAnon-type shit at me, citing blah people burning down cities, innocent white virgins being raped, etc. etc.

Do you have any sense that that privilege has isolated and put you in a cave to a certain extent, as it put me, and I think lots of White, privileged people in a cave. And that we have to work our way out of it to understand the anger and the pain, particularly Black people feel in this country. Do you feel-

Voter Casts Ballot Topless After Being Told Her Anti-Trump Shirt Was Illegal At Polling Place

seacoastonline.com

A woman voting at Tuesday’s primary found an unorthodox way of protesting the town moderator, who ruled her T-shirt was a form of electioneering: She took it off and voted topless.

Town Moderator Paul Scafidi said the woman walked into the Talbot Gymnasium in the afternoon wearing a “McCain Hero, Trump Zero” T-shirt. As a ballot clerk was checking her name off the voter list, Scafidi said he informed the woman she could not wear a shirt with a political candidate featured on it while she voted.

Scafidi said another woman nearby was wearing a T-shirt supporting the American flag and the woman with the “Trump Zero” shirt questioned why she was being singled out, which escalated into a brief argument.

“I said, I’d rather she not,” Scafidi said. “But she took it off so fast, no one had time to react so the whole place just went, ‘woah,’ and she walked away, and I let her vote. She could’ve just gone into the hallway and turned it inside-out.”

Note that the woman with the flag shirt was given a pass…

I’m not holding my breath, it seems this “Hey, lets you and him fight” shit always ends up working. While we hate and fight, the rich steal more from our futures, completely unchallenged. I don’t know how we can undo the amount of fear and hate the right wing has taught and pushed for the last 40 or more years. We got here because the same scumbags from back in the day are still in the background (or in Barr’s case right out in the open these days) and teaching new generations how to lie, cheat, steal and sow hatred to keep it all going. There is one infuriating section in Cohen’s book that no one has mentioned:

On page 94:

I remember sitting in Trump’s office on the 26th floor when a tax refund check for $10 million from the government arrived. He held the check up for me to see, flabbergasted but also delighted.

“Can you believe how fucking stupid the IRS is?” Trump asked. “Who would give me a refund of ten fucking million dollars? They are so stupid!”

It is irritating beyond words that the IRS is so neutered that it has been incapable for years of investigating the tax filings of the rich and powerful. They get away with tax evasion on a massive scale, stealing money that is needed to support our nation. Trump should have been in prison years ago for tax fraud but he has lived a golden life that has permitted him to escape any consequences for criminal conduct. As a result there will soon be 200,000 dead Americans who perished because of his negligence.

He should never have been given the opportunity to run for president but the myth of his real estate prowess propelled him into the office — a myth that could have been punctured if his taxes had seen the light of day or if the IRS had done its job years earlier.

SODA’s (Stop Offshore Drilling in the Atlantic) response to the asshole’s sudden change of heart on offshore drilling (bolding mine):

While the Sept. 8 announcement by President Trump of a 10-year moratorium on drilling along the South Carolina, Georgia and Florida coasts is welcomed news, SODA doesn’t trust that the same President who threatened our coast via an Executive Order just three years ago, is now seriously interested in protecting it via a moratorium just eight weeks ahead of an election.

Until there is a permanent, legislated ban to exploration and drilling in the Atlantic, we will continue to work to protect our coast.

The White House Memorandum states the South Atlantic is withdrawn from “leasing for 10 years, beginning on July 1, 2022, and ending on June 30, 2032.” It does not outline what will happen between now and July 2022, leaving open the possibility of seismic airgun surveys.

Despite the moratorium, federal agencies are still processing permits for an unprecedented amount of seismic blasting in the Atlantic, and the Trump Administration continues to roll back environmental protections related to oil and gas drilling (well control rules) and production (methane emissions).

We are deeply concerned that our neighbors to the north in the Mid-Atlantic zone, North Carolina and Virginia, which have been drilling targets since the early 1980s, are not protected under this moratorium. Drilling anywhere in the Atlantic is a threat to the entire Atlantic coast. Leaks and spills don’t respect state boundaries, as we saw with the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe. All coastal businesses and our tourism economies remain in jeopardy.

Rick Wilson’s latest for Daily Beast is pretty good. Paywalled, so here’s a chunk.

The ads write themselves: First play the tape of Donald, bored and smug in the residence at night on the phone in February with his new bestie Bob admitting the danger of a virus maybe five times “more deadly than even your strenuous flus.” Then the press conferences where he insisted day after day and month after month that COVID was a trifle.

That admission was such a blockbuster that it obscured the news, also from Woodward’s book, that Trump thinks his generals are “a bunch of pussies”—capping a week where he alienated a meaningful fraction of his political base by shitting on America’s war dead and our currently serving troops by wondering aloud just what is in it for them since there’s no real money in service.

Such a blockbuster that it obscured the news about Trump—who is not a smart man—announcing a highly classified program for the development of an “incredible” nuclear weapon. Bragging to Woodward about how “We have stuff that Putin and Xi have never heard about before” is ludicrous to the point of slapstick, circa Strangelove.

Finally, the Woodward interview peeled back another layer of Trump’s con game with his rubes: the idea that everything is fake news. The tapes are unspinnably and unequivocally pure Trump. This isn’t some reporter’s interpretation of Trump. This isn’t some editor cherry-picking facts to make Trump look like more of a stooge that he does on his own. This isn’t some headline writer sniping at a president he doesn’t like.

No, this was Donald Trump in an act of stupidity perhaps unparalleled in Washington media history. He tried to play Bob Fucking Woodward. Nothing about these interviews can be unspun or unrung. No matter how gamely his enablers and the comms shop grunt out excuses, his words are there, on tape. This wasn’t a president trying to calmly lead the nation through crisis; this was Trump simply not giving a fuck.

Israel had contained covid early on, but then reopened too fast/too soon, and it soon began spreading through the schools and yeshivas. So they’re going back into a lockdown just in time for the High Holy Days.

It isn’t just the Haredi community and its yeshivas, although the community is the biggest contributor to the rise in cases in the past two months. A close second is the Arab-Israeli community, which saw a substantial rise in cases in a relatively short amount of time. In the Haredi case, the virus spread due to the large numbers religiously attending religious events at yeshivas and a general disregard for COVID-19 protective practices. In the Arab-Israeli case, the virus spread due to the large numbers attending the community’s wedding ceremonies (which aren’t just a “family” thing but often also a hamula [clan] thing, and can involve most if not all of a towns populace) and a similar general disregard for COVID-19 protective practices.

As someone who’s been there the whole time, it really is infuriating. The country went from taking it all super seriously and bringing the outbreak down to almost nothing, to having a “mission successful” moment followed by general disregard for the pandemic, accompanied by the citizen’s desire to resume normal life and the continued spread of “just another flu” sentiments.

This was made worse by the country’s ongoing political mess; by a large segment of the populace starting to argue that another government-ordered lockdown would be overreaching, unnecessary and ultimately really harmful to the economy for no good reason; and by the fact that enforcement of the emergency COVID laws (mandatory masks in public places, etc.) was reduced to nothing.

Now, all of the early achievements against the pandemic have been reduced to nothing, and it’s essentially back to the May 2020 drawing board.
What a mess.

The thing with optical scanners is that the ballots are preserved for manual recounts. And regardless of what happens in the prez race, there WILL be some recounts and auditing, and it would be awfully easy for that to be exposed.

I like optical-scan ballots a lot - really it’s the only reasonable way to go.

David Remnick: “Trump’s Presidency has been appalling—but not unpredictably so. That he would bring misery and division to this country should have been obvious from the start. Flagrantly corrupt and instinctually autocratic, he immediately set about threatening democratic values and the rule of law, while encouraging autocrats abroad and white nationalists at home. He has aroused hatred for the free press and slimed the patriotism of everyone from John McCain to John Lewis.”

“It is a painful thing to say, but the evidence assaults us daily: Trump is a miserable human being. Ask his sister, a retired federal judge; in a taped conversation with the President’s niece, she refers to him as “cruel.” It is the rare adviser or satrap who leaves the White House and does not hasten to write a memoir or speak to the press with the intention of sounding a common alarm, that Trump poses a threat to national security even more profound than the news-weary public can imagine.”

One problem is that covid19 is as relentless as it is mindless. Any human screwups in the response will take their toll.

I believe I mentioned somewhere downstairs that the only states that don’t have paper trails are reliably red. So, while any kind of meddling is unacceptable, they’re not going to affect the voting for President that way.

This reminds me of the only way to get a Republican to consider ending the electoral college — the idea of stealing the national popular vote by making millions of fake R votes in red states.

I’d just deport them to Russia.

According to the statistics from the Israeli Ministry of Health, the annual average for flu fatalities in Israel over the past decade stands at 41 per year.

In 2018, there were 78 fatalities from flu in Israel throughout the year.
In 2012, there as a single fatality from flu in Israel throughout the year.
In 2010, there were 96 fatalities from flu in Israel throughout the year - the highest ever recorded.

In the past 5 months, there have been 1077 COVID-19 fatalities in Israel.

One of these things is NOT like the other.
Not by a long shot.

woodward defends himself to the AP

“He tells me this, and I’m thinking, ‘Wow, that’s interesting, but is it true?’ Trump says things that don’t check out, right?” Woodward told the AP during a telephone interview. Using a famous phrase from the Watergate era, when Woodward’s reporting for the Post helped lead to President Richard Nixon’s resignation, Woodward said his mission was to determine, “What did he know and when did he know it?”

and

“If I had done the story at that time about what he knew in February, that’s not telling us anything we didn’t know,” Woodward said. At that point, he said, the issue was no longer one of public health but of politics. His priority became getting the story out before the election in November.”

there are lots of ways to avoid a ‘panic’

lying in such fundamental and permanent way (it’s just a flu),
and never (even considering) correcting the record later is not one of them

As far as I know Florida uses optical scanners. So, while there is a paper trail, no one actually manually counts the ballots. And, I’m sure you could alter the scanning software to randomly change votes

My state does that too, I’m sure there are others. The paper trail means that it’s possible to check if the voting is contested.

The weird thing is that vote by mail has traditionally helped Republicans. I think Rick Wilson mentioned on his pod that Trump screaming against mail in voting is freaking out some Republican operatives because people who used to vote by mail are now saying they won’t because of Trump.

Yeah, I’m guessing if it’s close enough to trigger a recount, ballots will be manually checked over over and under votes.

Hmmm, Tom Campbell is back trying to create a new political party in California. The Common Sense Party, they’re calling it. Hasn’t qualified yet, they needed 67,000 signatures by July. Apparently they were at 20,000 in March but then the pandemic hit.

I’m really not sure what to make of Campbell, he was an early anti-Trumper and has flirted with libertarian ideas… plus he was dean of my law school after I’d graduated (which, granted, we have/had Eastman, Hewitt, and Canova on the faculty, so not sure what that’s actually worth).

But what’s really interesting is they aren’t putting out any sort of platform until they qualify as a party. Just some vague principles.

Let’s recall that Barr is promoting these conspiracy theories. People are not just reading about antifa through internet memes but the current AG is inflaming passions about civil unrest, blaming antifa for violence and accusing Reinoehl of being a member. It’s mainstream, promoted by this administration and GOP legislators.

In the process, a mis-diagnosed bipolar kicked in an laid wast to a lot of things. I’ve been able to cut some of my debt load down by 50% to date, but an ill-advised timeshare purchase has nailed me. re: #210 Jack Burton

So like every other “screw the 2 party duopoly!” idiot idea we’ve had since the 80s?

I think the idea is actually get people into the party and then create a platform based on what members actually believe. Instead of creating a platform that people can respond to by saying “well, this actual party already believes that, so why don’t you vote for them?”

And the thing is, the GOP is basically a third party in California, at this point. Dems hold every statewide office, both Senate seats, and an overwhelming majority of the congressional delegation. Per the latest numbers from the Secretary of State, registration break down D/R/I is 46.32/23.99/24.04 with the remaining 5% in third parties. So the idea that there is actually room for a new party in California isn’t completely out of bounds. I just don’t know what that party would actually look like.
